How do I setup a new computer with an existing security-enabled home network?

I couldn’t seem to configure my new computer to get an Internet connection like all the other computers in my home network. I already have the WEP key but it doesn’t seem to work. My new computer runs on Vista, and the other computers at home that have Internet connection run on XP. I’ve looked on a few other websites and couldn’t seem to find the solution specific to my problem. Any ideas you could share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
First of all, I would like to say thanks to all those who shared their thoughts and worked within the info that I provided earlier. For those who need to get additional info, the router for the home network is a Westell Model 2200. The new computer has a Realtek RTL8187B Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter. There is a 26-character alphanumeric code that I enter when I try to manually connect to the Internet (is that the WEP key?), but sometimes, when I try to make a connection, the system doesn’t even ask me to enter this code.

Can someone give some comprehensive help with these possible network configurations?

I have these possible configurations in mind specifically…
http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/4590/networkih0.png
Router 1 is a Linksys WRVS4400N and Router 2 is a WRT54G.

My question is which network is a better solution, with reguards to security and usability? And is either configuration feasable (or is ther another solution?)? I have some requirements…
[1] Linksys QuickVPN to connect to Router 1 (able to access Server 1)
[2] Need to be able to access shared files on Computer 3 as well as the printer.

Now, I know that WEP is easily cracked and I would definitely like to isolate a possibly comprimised Router 2 from my more secure Router 1 network. For this reason I thought configuration B might be the better solution? However I am not sure if Router 1 can be configured how I would like (able to connect through VPN and access Computer 3).

Well, If I can get any help or informed dialogue on this problem I would greatly appreciate it!

Network Security Question?

You are a Systems Administrator at a law firm in California. End-users are complaining they cannot connect to your HTTP server. The server is on the other side of a firewall which is configured to block all ICMP Echo packets.

Answer the following questions based on the data in this scenario:

1. What connectivity tests would you try in order to gain more data for solving the problem?
2. What is a possible explanation of the problem?
3. Based on your supposition of the problem, what is a potential solution?

Network Security Basics For Businesses

Like any new technology, security threats are constantly evolving and up-to-date network security is vital to businesses of all sizes. In order to meet this challenge, you must first understand and acknowledge the threats. Quite often business owners push network security issues down the priority list, and in many cases network security is not a concern at all. But what if one of your servers gets infected by a virus and must be taken down from the network, cleaned and restored to the previous state? How great would be the financial cost, downtime, and hassle be to get your systems back online?

Protect your Network

Computer and network security is not only about the hard- or software that you use, but also about the human sitting in front of it. A user who honestly believes that the bank of Nigeria wants to offer them 12.6 Million US Dollars will click their way through every “Are you sure?”, “Allow access?” or “Confirm security exception?” popup that the operation system, browser or virus scanner throws at them to get it. By doing this, the user has effectively invited trouble into the network. Social engineering is the unifying threat that puts all computers and their users at risk.

One way to protect your network is to filter out all undesirable traffic at the edge of the network in your internet gateway, before it can reach all your workstations and users. This is a good primary line of defense. There are various internet management suites available that allow you to control your network traffic. A professional network security suite should at least allow you to:

filter web traffic and prevent access to inappropriate websites, such as chat rooms, news sites, sports results or adult entertainment.
scan web downloads and email for viruses
block instant messengers such as MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, etc
block P2P and other file sharing software
require user authentication to access internet resources
firewall the network to prevent unauthorized access to your network resources
manage internet bandwidth usage

The beauty of this solution is that you can maintain your network security, set up a web filter, virus scanner and your firewall rules at one central point in your network, instead of having to make sure that the virus definitions for each and every computers anti-virus suite are kept up to date. This is also known as unified threat management. There are various web network security solutions out there for Windows and Linux as well as proprietary hardware appliances that have all the required functions built in. Typically such solutions are subscription based, but the price also depends on the number of clients inside your network and number of features you want.

Further steps to secure your network and IT infrastructure
Update your systems. Keep your operating systems and applications up-to-date and install the latest security patches.
Security policy. Make sure your workers don’t bring any use any removable media such as USB-sticks, iPods or CDs to work and don’t open any unexpected email attachments.
Strong passwords. Enforce a password policy that won’t allow weak and easy-to-guess passwords such as ‘qwerty’, ‘123456′, names, car brands or sports teams. Good passwords should be meaningless, not in any dictionary and be a mix of upper/lowercase letters and numbers.
Secure your data. Backup at least daily, and also make sure you can restore the backup quickly if required to. Store the backup media at a different physical location.
Change the default administrative log-ins after you install new applications. Change administrative passwords regularly.
Decide if you want to outsource your Network Security to a local specialist, or if you have the manpower and knowledge to handle the setup and maintenance by yourself.
The internet isn’t the only gateway into your servers that must be secure. Keep physical security of the servers in mind in case of unauthorized access to the hardware.
Your network security is a process, not a state. Keep your IT staff trained so they can keep up with the latest security developments.

Network Security Protects Your Business from Cyber Attacks

An average network security breach can cost a company between $90 and $305 per lost record, according to a new study from Forrester Research.  By monitoring your network, you can significantly reduce operating expenses and improve overall company productivity.

Are you prepared to suffer those losses?  Could your business survive a network attack that could shut down your entire operation for several days?  A recent survey by McAfee revealed that 26% of businesses require an entire week to get their company back up and running smoothly after a cyber attack.  Can your business afford a 7-day vacation?  The loss of revenue, resources and productivity associated with an attack may just be enough to put your company in the red and in today’s economy, not many businesses can suffer any more losses.

Network security solutions work to help you prevent, detect and solve security threats 24/7 – around the clock, all year long.  They can:

-  Detect and solve network security problems
-  Help you leverage investments in security
-  Free up time for IT staff
-  Secure laptop computers outside the office
-  Generate security reports on demand

To deal with network security threats effectively, IT administrators need immediate access to just the right data and problem-solving advice.  The more you know your network, the more you can guarantee uptime and optimal performance.  With network security solutions, you can defend and regain control of your applications, minimizing the loss of money and productivity.

Network security solutions can monitor every computer in your network, looking for malware and threats, missing critical updates and patches, suspicious traffic and non-compliance with best practices. The instant it detects a problem, it gives you personal, step-by-step advice on how to solve it.

Network security provides a complete solution for detecting and eliminating vulnerabilities, including the following areas:

Any way to get out of the 60 day lock when changing an email/name on a domain on Network Solutions?

Long story short, I’m a free lance web designer. I’m trying to transfer from Network Solutions to Host Monster. I needed a verification code and was unable to reach my employer, so I changed the e-mail thinking it’d be no big deal to get the verification code that way.

But security is tight.. like I’m transferring the president or something. So now it’s lock and unable to transfer for 60 days.

Can I call NS and get them to get rid of this? Can I get my boss to call them and verify that it is her domain and she is wanting to transfer it?
