Loan consolidation help (interest+principal?)?

I’m in the process of consolidating my loans but I’m a bit confused as to how loans work. I went over this stuff in high school but heck if I remember.

Anyway – the estimated total payment (interest+principal) comes out to 1.6 times my loan! For instance, if I owed $10,000 it is estimating that my total payment (interest + principal) will equal $16,000. So am I going to end up paying almost twice my loan in interest??

I don’t understand how the stated interest rate can be 5% yet it sounds like it’s true cost is 60%. Can anyone explain this to me?
Thanks

Student Loan consolidation or return to deferred status?

I have been out of school long enough that now I need to start paying my student loans. However I plan on going back to school this summer. When I go back will my loans return to a deferred status? Also I was thinking of consolidating the loans I have now. To lower my payments while I am out of school. But I am not sure how that will affect me once I go back to school. If it doesn’t have any effect who is the best loan consolidator? Anyone have some info or point me somewhere, where I can get real answers without a hassle. Thanks!!!

College loan consolidation and credit score?

So, having multiple degrees doesn’t stop you from making stupid decisions. I made some very poor decisions related to college loans.

I’m currently finishing grad school, but not a full-time student anymore, so my loans all went into repayment. Working part-time so I still have time to do research requirements. Long story, short: I have MANY loans and never consolidated–got overwhelmed by the payments and ended up 60 days late. Nonetheless, this is now reflected on my credit report. My score dropped about 130 points because of this. It took me YEARS to get my credit bordering between the Good/Excellent range, so I am extremely dissappointed in myself. I know this was stupid.

Anyway, my question – if I consolidate now, will that lead to any improvement in my credit score? Will my 15+ loan marks of “60 days late” just go to one, or won’t this make a difference? I will consolidate regardless, but am wondering if this could make any positive change in my score.

Private Student Loan Consolidation?

So I am going to be going to school to be a helicopter pilot and there are only two companies that I can get student loans through (Federal Loans are not available to this school). I was originally approved for 75k with Penn Security (Through TERI) with Prime+0 interest. TERI filed for Chapter 11 and will no longer fund my loan. Wells Fargo has given me an interest rate of 7.99+Prime on 25k per year. I will need this loan plus a loan from Sallie Mae for 20k as well. My question is can I consolidate after I’m done with school so that my interest rate isn’t as high, because that’s outrageous. I can’t afford to go to school with that high of an interest rate. Please only answer my question and don’t tell me to go to a different school or try another lender. I only have two lending options and I just moved 300 miles to go to this school because I was already approved with Penn.

Can you refinance student loans after consolidation?

I consolidated my student loans years ago (when interest rates were high). Last year I called my lender to see if I could refinance and take advantage of the lower interests rates. I was told that I could not do this because I had already consolidated my student loans and you would not refinance without consolidation. Is there any way around this?

I am back in school and currently paying cash for tuition. If I instead took out a small student loan this term, could I then consolidate that loan with my other student loan and take advange of the lower interest rates that way?

Student Loan Consolidation Help Please!?

I am a May 2008 graduate with a significant amount of debt.

Because I transferred, I have over $50,000 in a number of private and federal loans from different companies in two different states. I just have a few questions about consolidation.

1. Can you consolidate both federal and private loans into one?
2. I just started working, so I don’t make that much, do you think consolidation is a good option? I can make the payments, but it makes everything else a lot tighter.
3. If I consolidate, what companies can I trust?
4. What companies are best?
5. What if I go back to grad school later and need to take out loans again? Can I add to the consolidation? Or does something else happen?

Any information will help. I am trying to be responsible and budget, but having a number of student loans is making things pretty difficult. Thanks in advance!

Student Loan Consolidation – Will it lower my mthly payment?

By the time I finish school next year, I figure I will owe the following in sub/unsub student loans:
$12,990.02 2.875% (Student loan deferred from last time I was in school, 82 mths (of the 120) left in payment term.)
$10,884.10 6.80%
$13,000.00 6.80%

I used the payment estimator and it said my monthly payment will be $455.26! Will my mthly payment be lower when I consolidate the loans?
