How did Green Bay ever get a franchise?
Seems like an odd place to put a sports franchise. What’s the story behind them getting a team? How did they get a team when there were so many bigger cities at the time without one?

i think wikipedia would have this answer. or wikianswers.com
but as far as i know, heres why:
when football was turned into a “marketable” sport in the early 1900s, i think any city could have a team if they wanted. because the BIG cities did not want to support the game because it was so unknown and baseball was better at the time. so any city could have won if they wanted to participate in the new football game. and i think greenbay got in FOR THAT REASON. they were a small city and had nothing else going for them so they took a shot with this thing called the NFL and rolled with it and became the first great franchise in the history of football. and because the NFL kind of started in the midwest with cities like green bay and chicago

When pro football began most teams were from small towns. Green Bay survived largely due to the rivalry developed by Halas and Lambeau between the Bears and the Packers.

No one knows. They never should have gotten a franchise, that team is a waste of space and a travesty to the sport.
(I’m a Bears fan)
EDIT: Brewmeister,
I was going to write a witty segment about your blue hair and soul patch on your chin, but I realized, anyone who is dumb enough to look like that, doesn’t deserve the time or day. Oh, and btw
You are a perfect profile of the old “piss-and-moan, knuckle-headed, POS” Chicago turd.
how did you decide that Chicago turd didn’t belong in the quotes? I’m curious b/c it seems illogical. If anything should be in the quotes I think it is Chicago turd. Oh well. And finally, if I had to make an assessment of your character based on your picture, I’d say you are the type of person who thinks they are hot stuff, i.e. cool. I’d also say you probably sit in a coffee shop and try to talk about the philosophy behind other crap, when in reality you should be talking about the philosophy of people who sit in coffee shops and know nothing about philosophy yet try to act smart. But hey? who am I to judge you? Perhaps you use your blue hair to sneak up on polar bears in the snow! Maybe that soul patch protects you from the forces of evil! Who knows!?!?

It only seems odd today because they’re the only team of their kind left from the early days of pro football. In the 1920s, the NFL was full of teams from small Midwestern cities — places like Muncie, Indiana; Massillon, Ohio; and Pottsville, Pennsylvania.
As the NFL grew, teams started moving off to bigger cities. But the Packers stayed put, and they survived when those other teams didn’t for a few reasons. First, they were successful on the field. Between 1929 and 1939, they won 5 NFL titles. And second, they were owned by the community. When the Packers fell on hard times, the community rallied to save the team and helped fund its continued existence. The Packers have been owned by the fans and the community ever since.

Well when football first started Green Bay was a huge meat packing and industrial area with jobs and a good economy and the poeple wanted to get into football so they started a team and ownership was of the people thats why it has lasted so long because the people own it not some rich baffoon who wastes money
