Everyone knows wool is the natural choice for outdoor socks due to its ability to resist moisture and odors (cotton absorbs and holds sweat making the foot sometimes hotter, sometimes colder, but always more sore and stinky). And, I was looking for a new wool hiking sock (I haved tried quite a few but have never really been happy). I previously owned Smartwool Adventurer socks and wore them with different liners. The new Smartwool PhD (and Smartwool Hiking Light Crew 10 129) socks, however, offer a far better fit (but same tough merino wool used by REI, EMS, etc). So good at preventing sock rub and the resulting blisters that liners are not needed. This PhD Outdoor is the most snug Smartwool made (of the two as well as ever). And, they are the most comfortable socks I have ever worn – suitable for any outdoor activity (for fun or profession – dear firemen: wool won’t ignite or melt like synthetics) in any season. And, they cost less than my old Adventurers. I am very happy. For more aggessive treks, try the heavier Smartwool PhD Outdoor Medium Crew.

These are the most comfortable socks I’ve ever worn. No itchy wool feel, great support for arch and ankles without being tight. It’s true – my feet don’t smell even after working in them for 14 or 16 hours. My feet love them so much I’m going to get several more pairs.
