How hard is it for a franchise to move to another city?

Does it take time? Money? Public Support?

Yes, those three are all issues that they will need to deal with.

You simply just cant move to a new city overnight, you can generally foresee some issues that caused it. i.e. the Sonics were in a major dispute over their contract with the stadium and it was widely known for years.

Money issues is a major reason, especially those in very poor markets are more likely to move.

Public support would be an issue to because sometimes they use tax payer money to pay for stadiums.

Tho i havent heard much news in NBA franchises, but there are a few key franchises that are in some disputes.

Kings and a new stadium. The Maloof have been asking for a new stadium to be built for a while. There has been some talks of the Maloofs moving the kings to Las Vegas where they own hotels.

In football, the 49ers have issues with their stadiums as well the Oakland As and both are threatening to move to other parts of the bay area.

Sometimes it can even more than that, in the case of the Green Bay Packers and a few NBA teams that are actually owned by the city they are located in. If the team wanted to move to a different city(God forbid that the Packers would ever leave Green Bay though) the city would have have to vote on whether they would want to let them go or make them stay. But in the case of privately owned teams then yes it mostly about time, money, and public support.

Sometimes it’s very hard, and sometimes it’s so easy the city offers to move you!

It’s best to find a reason to leave once the lease is up on the arena. That’s when there are no obligations and teams can just find another city with a ready arena to move into, either permanently or until a new one is built.

The Phoenix Coyotes want to leave badly but I think their arena lease isn’t up yet, so they can’t go. It sucks because no one really goes. I don’t know what options are on the table, but I could only see bankruptcy, perhaps? There was a rumor that many NHL teams could go under or contract made by an executive, but who knows, he could’ve been a blowhard.

all it takes is a piece of shit like Clay Bennett, to buy a team and scam the city and the people and move it to OKC.
